The
varieties are Gulf Coast and Sharp, and they are $30 each, or 3 for $75. (These
are fully mature, four to five foot tall bushes. Smaller bushes will be available
next spring.)
HOW
TO CARE FOR YOUR BLUEBERRY BUSHES:
Blueberries
need a highly acidic soil, which we do not have here. They will do best if they
are containerized. If you need to put them into another container, use pine
bark mixed with peat to maintain the acidity, or pure ground pine bark. Mulch
with pine needles if you have them. Blueberries also like to be moist and do
extremely well in Earth Boxes. Although a blueberry will fruit by itself, if
you have two varieties close to each other, the cross pollination increases
fruit size and quantity. Use a good timed release fertilizer with minors for
the best fruit. A good fertilizer can be found and ordered from www.plantadvice.com
(see the label on your container). I use Valentines Day, Memorial Day,
and Labor Day as my fertilizer days with a 3-month time release fertilizer.
With very little care and effort you can raise your own, pesticide-free blueberries
for your family to enjoy!
